The Millers sign Paul Green...
Rotherham United have completed signing number 11 for the close season after securing a deal for midfielder Paul Green, subject to medical.
The Republic of Ireland International was shown through the corridors of New York Stadium this afternoon before agreeing a two-year deal with the Millers.
With the majority of Steve Evans’ squad reporting back for pre-season training this morning, Green is expected to join up with his new teammates at training headquarters at Roundwood next week, after a spell away with the full Republic of Ireland squad.
“We are delighted to have signed Paul after several chats with his representatives,” boss Steve Evans told www.themillers.co.uk
“The lad had a magnificent finish to the season with Ipswich Town so it wasn’t a surprise to find there was significant interest in him, so we are very pleased to add him to our squad.
“I think the lure of Championship football, knowing what we are about as a football club and our magnificent stadium all helped to convince him that this was the club for him.
“Paul is a full international, he has just returned from an end of season trip with Martin O’Neill’s Republic of Ireland, so he will be given a few more days to recuperate. He has been down here today to finalise the deal and have his medical but he won’t officially begin work with us until Monday next week.”
Green, 31, is another player with a raft of Championship experience after starting his professional career with Doncaster Rovers, before spells with Derby County and Leeds United. Last season he finished the campaign on loan at Ipswich Town, whilst still playing internationally when he earned his 20th cap in a friendly with Costa Rica.
“I first came across him when he was a young lad playing for Doncaster in non-league where had a terrific time,” added Evans.
“His career has really gone on from those early days and I certainly think that he will compliment the likes of Frecklington, Newton, Milsom etc in our midfield. We have some really good strength in depth in that department and Paul Green certainly adds to that.
“He knows this part of the country really well, and moving back here was an important factor because there were clubs in London that were very keen on him. I was in no doubt that he was someone we wanted here to the point when I think he was sick of hearing from me!
“I was delighted when I received the call over the weekend to say that this was the club that he wanted to sign for.”
Evans today ran the rule over the majority of his squad when they returned for pre-season training, with several new signings meeting their new teammates for the first time.
The Millers start their Championship campaign when they travel to Derby County on August 9th, one of Green’s former clubs.
