STEVE EVANS
Steve Evans was reappointed Rotherham United Manager on 17th April 2024, following the departure of previous Head Coach, Leam Richardson.
The Scot arrived in South Yorkshire with a proven track of delivering success, which included winning back-to-back promotions from Sky Bet League Two to the Championship with the Millers, and maintained their place in the second tier between 2012 and 2015.
Evans rejoined from Stevenage after two highly successful years in charge of the Hertfordshire club. He saved them from relegation to the National League after arriving towards the back end of the 2021/22 campaign and then, steered them to an incredible automatic promotion success the following year.
Under his guidance, Boro continued to defy the odds, with the club spending much of the 2023/24 campaign battling for a third tier Play-off spot, leaving them 9th in the Sky Bet League One table at the time of his departure.
PLAYING CAREER
After coming through the ranks at Bolton Wanderers as a teenager, Steve Evans returned to his native Scotland. After enjoying spells with Clyde, Albion Rovers, Ayr United, Hamilton Academical and St. Johnstone, the then-24-year-old’s playing career was cut short by a knee injury.
COACHING CAREER
Evans began his managerial career in non-league as manager of Stamford, where he would earn his first of a plethora of promotions, leading the Lincolnshire-based side to league title during a fruitful four year spell.
His good work caught the eye of divisional rivals Boston United, who he guided to the EFL with two promotions in four years.
Crawley Town was his next destination, where Evans enjoyed another highly successful tenure. During five year with the Red Devils, he took them to the Fifth Round of the Emirates FA Cup on two occasions, with one such campaign ended by Manchester United in a narrow 1-0 reverse at Old Trafford.
As well as enjoying success in the cups, Evans again added another promotion to his already glittering managerial CV when he delivered the National League title, taking Crawley to the EFL for the first time in their history.
And he played an instrumental role in another promotion, before leaving the club to join the Millers for his first spell in charge. In his first full season in the hotseat, Evans oversaw a run of five successive victories to end the 2012/13 campaign, which saw Rotherham seal promotion back to League One with a memorable 2-0 victory over Aldershot Town at AESSEAL New York Stadium.
Again, he would build on this success, when the club – and Evans – earned another promotion in the most dramatic of circumstances. After finishing 4th in the regular season, his team overcame Preston North End in the Play-off semi-finals, before coming back from 2-0 down to defeat Leyton Orient on penalties at the Wembley showpiece final.
Having led the Millers up to the second tier for the first time since 2005, he then kept them there in his final full season in charge, before his departure in October 2015.
Since then, spells with Leeds United, Mansfield Town, Peterborough United and Gillingham have followed, before he took over at Stevenage in March 2022.
