Rotherham United forward Tom Eaves was in red-hot form on Saturday, as he netted twice to fire the Millers to a 5-2 final day victory over Cardiff City at the Sky Bet Championship.
Steve Evans’ side were in their groove at the AESSEAL New York Stadium and led when Cohen Bramall cut the ball back for Jordan Hugill to finish on 25 minutes. After briefly being pegged back by Nat Phillips’ header 38 minutes, the Millers went in 2-1 to the good at the break thanks to Eaves, who applied an excellent finish on the half volley from another Bramall cross.
The Bluebirds briefly restored parity again through Ollie Tanner but Eaves was again on hand to put his team back in front shortly after, when Hakeem Odoffin was fouled in the penalty box. The striker stepped up and made no mistake with a composed penalty to make it 3-2.
The goalscoring was not done there, Sam Nombe netted the best goal of the contest on 63 minutes, before Eaves had a hand in his strike-partner Hugill’s second, flicking the ball through before Phillips’ loose back pass presented him with the chance to finish.
Eaves’ goals ensured he finished the campaign as the club’s top scorer and supporters were clearly impressed with his display, voting him the Mattress Online Man of the Match with 48.8% of the 795 votes cast, with Bramall, Hugill and Nombe all nominated for the award.
